Kyrie Irving is having the best season of his career and it shut up his critics

Kyrie IrvingPhoto: Getty ImagesMaybe, just maybe. Some of them were “pawns.”That’s what Kyrie Irving called “the media” before the season started, as he was coming off a failed attempt to not speak to reporters this season. Irving would eventually apologize for referring to professionals as the weakest piece on a chessboard, but feelings were hurt. But, on some level, did Irving have a point? Because all the drama — I’ll get to that in a second — and noise that once smothered Irving suddenly disappeared when he got back on the court. Taking shots at someone when they’re down and then going silent when they’re up is a pawn-like move. Keep that same energy for the good and the bad. The naysayers were quiet again last night, as the Nets defeated the Warriors 134-117 as Irving led Brooklyn with 23 points in Kevin Durant’s first game back in Oakland. This season has been a rollercoaster for Irving, as he’s only played 19 games so far. There was the “pawn” thing, others thought he should have been traded for James Harden, he took personal time away from the team without explaining why, then he was at his sister’s birthday party without a mask, he showed up on a Zoom call for Manhattan District Attorney candidate Tahanie Aboushi, and then we found out that Jackie MacMullan thinks he and other players are “property” of NBA teams. It got so ridiculous at one point that Stephen A. Smith said Irving should retire. G/O Media may get a commissionBut then, Irving started hoopin’. It’s like everyone had forgotten that he’s one of the best basketball players on Earth. 26.37.25.25.18.30.29.37.38.28.16.26.25.26.39.15.27.35.23.Those are Irving’s scoring numbers for every game he’s played this season in Brooklyn, making him the Nets’ second-leading scorer. Irving is in the midst of the best statistical season of his career. His 27.6 points per game are a career-high. He’s shooting 95.1 percent from the free-throw line, 52.5 percent from the field, and 40.9 percent from deep. His assists and rebounds have taken a dip, but that could be due to a position change on his part.As the NBA is still trying to force its players into playing what will be remembered as the worst and most lethargic All-Star Game of all time, Irving is still projected to be named a starter as the second round of fan votes have come in. Fans still find joy in watching the enigmatic star do his thing.Kyrie Irving has always been “different.” It’s just who he is. And while at some point there will be more controversy due to something he did or said, it’s always funny to see how quickly the noise around him lessens as soon as he starts dribbling a basketball. Whenever drama vanishes that quickly, it usually means it was never anything to begin with. .

‘Frustrated’ Russell Wilson and Seahawks may be headed toward inevitable split

Russell Wilson’s camp has let it be known he is getting tired of being hit so much.Image: Getty ImagesDeshaun Watson has some competition for the most dramatic quarterback situation this offseason – it looks like things are a little gloomy in the Pacific Northwest. Tensions are rising between Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks, and as Deadspin’s resident Seahawks fan, it’s my job to try and explain this current situation while keeping my heart mostly out of it. So here it goes.First, the contract. Wilson is the third-highest paid quarterback in the league (and all-time) with an average annual salary of $35 million. Until the Texans backed up the Brinks truck for Watson at $39 million per year and the Chiefs essentially made Mahomes the Governor of Missouri with the largest contract in all of American sports history ($450 million over 10 years), Wilson was at the top of the list. Here’s the difference — Mahomes and Watson are 26. Wilson is 33. So, where did the rumors of trouble in paradise begin? CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora (so, take it with a grain of salt) posted on twitter that he was “hearing Russell Wilson’s camp has grown increasingly frustrated by the Seahawks inability to protect the 8-time Pro Bowler. He has been sacked 394 times in 9 seasons. This situation warrants monitoring.” At first, this sounded like offseason smoke coming from the agent of a player trying to pressure an organization to make some changes. I didn’t really buy it. Then, on Tuesday, in a Zoom press conference after winning the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award on Saturday, Wilson confirmed La Canfora’s reports.“I’m frustrated on getting hit too much. I’m frustrated with that,” Wilson said.Wilson also appeared on the Dan Patrick show, where he was asked if the Seahawks have received any calls about a potential trade for him. “Yeah I definitely believe they’ve gotten calls, for sure,” Wilson said. “Yeah, but you’re a franchise quarterback, you’re a Hall of Fame quarterback. You’re not available, are you?” Patrick asked. “I’m not sure if I’m available or not, that’s a Seahawks question.” He went on to say “I’m not sure how long I’ll play in Seattle — hopefully it’s forever, but things change.” G/O Media may get a commissionThe next day, Patrick reported that the Seahawks brass is none too happy with Wilson’s candor this week. “A source told me that the Seahawks’ management is not happy with Russell Wilson and his camp for taking this to the media,” Patrick said. “You wonder if they’re going to be able to coëxist. The current situation is not sustainable. That’s what I was told.”Wilson has every right to be frustrated. Since 2014, the last time the Seahawks were in the Super Bowl (ah, the good ol’ days… remember when we were supposed to be the next dynasty, and then Pete Carroll fucked it all up by throwing on the goal line and losing the locker room? Fun times), no team has spent less on their offensive line than Seattle, and no team has re-signed fewer drafted offensive lineman than Seattle. They haven’t signed a single offensive lineman to a second contract. Not one. To be fair, I wouldn’t sign the garbage players general manager John Schneider has been drafting since then either. So, where do things stand? Wilson has an absurdly high contract and is 33 years old, Schneider inexplicably received a six-year contract extension (after I specifically asked the Seahawks not to), the Seahawks are expected to only have around $2 million in cap space going into the 2021 season, have only three draft picks this year, don’t have a first-rounder for the next two drafts (which I guess doesn’t matter because Schneider can’t hit on a first round pick to save his life), and have aging stars at their impact positions. Oh, and Wilson is frustrated with them, and they’re frustrated with him. This is fine. This is totally fine. It would be damn near unprecedented for a team to trade away a franchise quarterback with a Hall of Fame resume, but the Seahawks are running out of options. Schneider’s new contract ensures that he has the freedom to rebuild this team without worrying about his job security. The only question the Seahawks need to ask themselves is if they are OK with accepting mediocrity until Wilson leaves in free agency in three years, or if they want to get something in return for him now and press the reset button. And on that note, my stomach hurts, and it’s time for some Pepto Bismol and a therapy session. .

New Jags coach Urban Meyer, a domestic abuser protector, hires guy fired for persistent racist behavior at Iowa

Urban Meyer has hired former Iowa strength coach Chris Doyle to his staff.Image: APWhile problematic, Urban Meyer is always consistent. In his first head coaching job since he “retired” from Ohio State after covering up and lying about the fact that he knew one of his most-trusted assistants was beating his wife, Urban Meyer has unveiled his coaching staff with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and it includes a dude that has a history of saying really mean things to Black people.Former Iowa strength coach Chris Doyle will serve as the Jaguars director of sports performance. Why was Doyle on the market for a new job, you ask?Because he got run out of town at his last gig for allegations of what he said to Black players over multiple decades. In June, Doyle reached a separation agreement with the school he had worked at since 1999 as a strength and conditioning coach (for which he made $800,000 a year, walking away with nearly ¾ of that in the separation) after a large group of Black players spoke out how he mistreated them for years.“There have been statements made about my behavior that are not true,” Doyle wrote in a statement from the summer. “I do not claim to be perfect. I have made mistakes, learned lessons and like every American citizen, can do better. At no time have I ever crossed the line of unethical behavior or bias based upon race. I do not make racist comments and I don’t tolerate people who do.”G/O Media may get a commissionListen, I’m not calling Doyle a racist. But …When a white person that’s been accused of being racist says they aren’t racist, you can be sure the damning evidence is around the corner. It’s Racism 101, “deny, deny, deny.” One of the allegations against Doyle was that he told Black players he would “send them back to the ghetto” if they didn’t meet his standards. Here’s a look at some of the other things Black players from the program shared about what was going on behind closed doors:Emmanuel Rugamba: Iowa WR 2016-2017Cedric Boswell: Iowa DB 2016-2017Terrance Pryor: Iowa LB 2008-2011Akrum Wadley: Iowa RB 2014-2017Here’s to hoping that Chris Doyle tries this with grown men in the NFL. Because if he does, there will be an ass-whooping waiting for him. .

Kentucky and Duke haven’t sucked this bad since Watergate… literally

John Calipari and Kentucky are just 6-12 so far this season.Illustration: Getty ImagesIt’s no secret that the blue bloods of college basketball have been worse this year than an Amy Schumer stand-up special.Traditional powerhouse teams that have relied heavily on young talents like Kentucky and Duke are struggling worse than a communications student in a Calculus III class. The current conditions of the pandemic and the slow vaccine rollout have made everyday life even more difficult for these younger athletes.Plus, they just haven’t been able to play that well.Things haven’t been this bad for both the Wildcats and Blue Devils at the same time since 1974, when Richard Nixon’s presidency was on the brink and the Jackson 5 were making music for Motown. It’s been a very wacky season for everyone this year, but the struggles of these two universities are noteworthy not only because of the rarity of these teams being hot garbage but because of how both of these programs have been structured in recent memory. G/O Media may get a commissionUsually, both of these institutions send their fair share of one-and-done prospects to the NBA draft following the season, yet neither of these teams seem to have prospects that can currently make a difference on an NBA roster. And with the programs bringing in top four/five-star talent next season, it’ll set up an interesting situation for both John Calipari and Mike Krzyzewski. This season will likely be an anomaly for both these programs but when you haven’t looked this terrible since before the Rumble in the Jungle, we can’t let you off the hook.Duke and Kentucky will need to get it together to avoid their first losing seasons since 1994-95 and 1988-89 respectively. .

Rings don’t make Tom Brady the NFL GOAT, just as they don’t make Bill Russell the NBA GOAT

Tom Brady is still four rings short of Bill Russell’s 11.Illustration: APTom Brady’s minions are at it again. With Brady securing his seventh Super Bowl ring on Sunday after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers dismantled the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV, they are out in full force trying to convince others that Brady is the Greatest Of All Time.Their reasoning is just simple math.Brady has the most Super Bowl rings so he is the best ever. Case closed. They could not be more wrong. If it were just a ring total, Bill Russell would be the best ever in the NBA.With the Celtics, Russell won 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons.By far, Russell won more than any player that ever played in the league.Yet, few consider him the G.O.A.T. Most consider Michael Jordan, who was a perfect 6-0 in NBA Finals and won all six MVPs in the process. And it’s fair because there has to be context and nitpicking when you want to crown someone the greatest. The same goes for Brady.Sure, Brady is a great player and, arguably, the most accomplished quarterback in the NFL. Most would concede that as fact.G/O Media may get a commissionBut the greatest? No way, no how. Some could argue Brady has turned into the NFL’s Robert Horry who won seven rings in his NBA career. And honestly, a case could be made that Horry was more clutch. His nickname was “Big Shot Bob.”Brady always seems to get all the credit, while others put in the work.Anybody who watched the Super Bowl knows the story of the game was the Bucs defense, not Brady who threw for just 201 yards and three TDs.The Bucs’ entire defense should have split the MVP trophy for holding Patrick Mahomes and the high-powered Chiefs offense to NO TDs in the 31-9 victory. We’ve seen this movie before. In two of Brady’s seven Super Bowl victories, the Messiah, as some see him, threw a grand total of one touchdown. Yep.The Bucs’ entire defense should have split the MVP trophy for holding Patrick Mahomes and the high-powered Chiefs offense to NO TDs in the 31-9 victory. In the Patriots’ 20-17 victory over the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI, Brady completed just 16 passes for 145 yards and a TD.Somehow, Brady was named MVP. The real winner should have been the Patriots’ defense, which stopped the Rams’ Greatest Show on Turf offense. In 2019, the Patriots beat the Los Angeles Rams, 13-3, in the lowest-scoring Super Bowl ever. Again, it was the defense which enabled Brady to win his sixth ring. In that game, Brady had NO touchdowns, an INT and a fumble. The MVP went to receiver Julian Edelman despite not catching a touchdown. Sure, New England won both games, but Brady hardly had anything to do with them.Joe Montana’s resume, on the other hand, is similar to Jordan’s. Both are just about flawless. That’s what makes many believe they are the GOATs in their sports.Montana was 4-0 in the Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers, throwing 11 TDs and NO PICKS. He won the SB MVP three times — first player to accomplish that. He won two championships with Jerry Rice and two without.Montana has the SB record for most passes (122) without an interception and the all-time highest passer rating at 127.8.That’s the stuff of a person you consider the greatest to ever do it.Not a player like Brady that often was along for the ride. And don’t forget, Brady has lost three Super Bowls. He was beaten twice by Eli Manning and the New York Giants, including in 2008.That’s when Brady’s 18-0 undefeated Pats squad managed just 14 points and lost. And don’t forget when Brady lost to Eagles backup QB Nicks Foles in the Super Bowl in 2018, Brady coughed up the ball on a fumble late that helped secure Philadelphia’s first Super Bowl victory. We get it. The NFL is a quarterback league. The last eight league MVPs have all been quarterbacks. The QB gets too much blame for losing and too much credit for winning. The latter, has really been the story of Brady’s career.Forget the defense, forget the kick game, forget the running game, it’s all about Brady. But in reality, Brady wouldn’t have so many rings without them. .

What a shock! The moronic maskless gather in large numbers to celebrate a championship in a pandemic…again

Streets of Tampa were flooded by Bucs fans sans mask in what looks like a Super super spreader event.Image: Getty ImagesThis is becoming as common as another Tom Brady Super Bowl win.Last night, after the Buccaneers won their first Super Bowl since 2003, fans took to the streets to celebrate the championship. This is the part where I remind you that the COVID-19 pandemic is still around and a public health threat to everyone — including those who celebrated last night.Tampa Bay could be the first city to host a Super Bowl and a superspreader event on the same day. Here are some scenes of Florida people last night. G/O Media may get a commissionI can find Waldo before I spot a mask. This isn’t the first time a team championship has led to thousands of maskless people in the streets. A few months ago, Los Angeles health officials correlated alarming rates of COVID spread to Lakers and Dodgers celebrations. And in January, Bama fans packed the streets of Tuscaloosa after the Tide rolled over THE Ohio State University in the CFP championship game.Last week, Dr. Fauci went on NBC’s Today to warn Americans about Super Bowl gatherings and celebrations. “Every time we do have something like this, there always is a spike, be it a holiday, Christmas, New Year’s, Thanksgiving,” he told Savannah Guthrie. “Enjoy the game. Watch it on television, but do it with the immediate members of your family, the people in your household. As much fun as it is to get together in a big Super Bowl party, now is not the time to do that.”Clearly, the recommendation by the nation’s top infectious-disease doctor made too much sense for some. After the celebrations subsided, Tampa Bay Mayor Jane Castor expressed disappointment in her constituents who blatantly disregarded the city’s COVID protocols.“It’s a little frustrating because we’ve worked so hard in cooperation with the NFL and the county…putting the executive order in place that masks had to be worn in specific areas that we knew groups would be congregating,” she said. “Yes, we did see some videos, did see some individuals that weren’t wearing a mask. At this point in dealing with COVID-19, there is a level of frustration when you see that.”While there is a mask mandate in effect for the city of Tampa Bay, the state of Florida has not issued a statewide mask requirement. Apparently, wearing a piece of cloth over one’s mouth and nose, to keep others safe, restricts too much freedom. We won’t know for a few days, maybe weeks, whether the Super Bowl caused a super spread. I hope Tampa doesn’t have an outbreak. But when a team wins and thousands flock to the streets without any protection, what else do we think will happen? At some point, when we get to the other side of this, we will all look back at the role sports played in prolonging this pandemic. It won’t be anything to celebrate. .

Racism is why your favorite team hired a sorry white guy instead of a really good Black Super Bowl coach

Tampa. Bay OC Byron Leftwich (l.) celebrates Bucs’ Super Bowl win with Tom Brady.Image: Getty ImagesStupid is as stupid does.Racism has always caused white people to make really bad decisions, especially in sports. I mean, how else can you explain the cliff that baseball has fallen off given the way the sport has treated Black players at every level for decades. The determination to keep certain aspects of sports as white as possible has always come at a cost. And on Sunday night, the world watched as three of football’s best coaches — who happened to be Black — had to serve as assistants due to white owners not hiring them for one of the seven head coaching vacancies that have been filled over the past few weeks. In September, I wrote about how racism is why teams usually draft sorry white quarterbacks, as I broke down some recent drafts in which multiple teams have totally whiffed on selecting a franchise Black quarterback, all because they preferred a sorry white one.Hatred and bigotry really are terrible business models.A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the two teams left standing after an unforgettable season due to COVID-19, had staffs that were filled with women and Black coaches. It was the ultimate example of all the benefits that come along when diversity is encouraged and supported. After every Super Bowl, the winning quarterback and both head coaches get a ton of the attention, praise, and blame for what worked and didn’t work. That’s just how it is. But, in a game in which three of the four offensive and defensive coordinators were Black, we need to address how well those men did, and why they won’t be leading their own teams next season.Image: Getty ImagesG/O Media may get a commissionEric Bieniemy – OC, Kansas City ChiefsFor the last few weeks, all we’ve heard are rumors that Bieniemy (the poster child for how overqualified Black candidates get passed over), doesn’t “interview well,” which is why he hasn’t been hired. That lie was put to rest when the Lions hired a man that wants his team to bite their opponents’ kneecaps. The other excuse we heard was that since Bieniemy didn’t “call the plays” in Kansas City, Andy Reid was the reason why the Chiefs offense and Patrick Mahomes were so great. Well, since the Chiefs and Mahomes both sucked on Sunday night and were held to just three field goals, as Mahomes threw two interceptions and was barely over 50 percent, Bieniemy can’t be blamed for Reid’s play-calling failures. The lack of production is squarely on the shoulders of Reid and his quarterback. You can’t have it both ways.Image: Getty ImagesByron Leftwich – OC, Tampa Bay BuccaneersThis is what was said about Leftwich before the Super Bowl:“I was very, very pissed Byron at least didn’t get an interview this year. For the job that he’s done, I get way too much credit and so does Tom Brady.” – Bruce Arians. “Now that we’re working together, it’s been great. He’s got a great work ethic, great football IQ and it’s been a growing process for both of us in growing together. When you work together for a long period of time, we began to see the game very similarly. When he’s watching film, he thinks, ‘Oh, this is what Tom would like,’ and vice versa.” – Tom Brady. One of the most beloved head coaches in NFL history and the greatest football player of all time are all huge fans of Leftwich, and he couldn’t even get an interview. Sunday night, the Bucs offense scored 31 points and accumulated 26 first downs, 340 yards, averaged 5.4 yards a play, and didn’t turn the ball over once. You would think an offensive coach of that caliber would demand some level of respect. But after the game, Leftwich was busy correcting media members that think all Black people look alike.Image: APTodd Bowles: DC, Tampa Bay BuccaneersDrew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, or Patrick Mahomes. It doesn’t matter. If you put a future hall of fame quarterback in front of a Todd Bowles defense, he will make them look bad.According to NextGenStats, Mahomes ran 497 yards before throwing the ball or being sacked on Sunday night, making it the highest total for any quarterback this season. Bowles barely blitzed and took away the Chiefs’ most explosive weapon in Tyreek Hill, as he was held to seven catches for just 73 yards. The scheme was a masterpiece, as Bowles’ defense turned Mahomes into the one thing he is not, a game manager. Instead of the exciting big plays and ridiculous passes he throws multiple times a game, we’ve never seen Mahomes be a quarterback that can methodically take his team down the field for multiple drives. Bowles knew that and exposed the biggest hole in Mahomes’ game. Now, this is the part where someone will bring up the fact that Bowles had “his chance” when he was the head coach of the New York Jets from 2015-2018. And because of that, I will also remind you that in his first season in New York, Bowles won more games over two seasons (10) than did Adam Gase, the sorry white coach that replaced him (9).Sadly, the trio of Bieniemy, Leftwich, and Bowles will all be assistant coaches next season. Hopefully, they’ll get interview opportunities, but that remains to be seen. You have to prepare for the worse and hope for the best whenever it comes to race relations and the NFL. Because in case you forgot, during the Super Bowl the league ran a commercial about how they’ve committed $250 million to combating systemic racism, all while still being a proponent of systemic racism by the continued blackballing of Colin Kaepernick. .

Tom Brady was fine, but give the Bucs’ defense their due

Tampa’s Shaq Barrett was on top of Patrick Mahomes all throughout last night’s lopsided victory.Photo: Getty ImagesThere is zero chance I would have believed you last week if you told me that the Chiefs, with one of the most explosive and creative offenses in the NFL, and with one of the most talented arms the league has ever seen, would be kept out of the end zone in the Super Bowl. But that happened. The Buccaneers defense did something nobody was able to accomplish all season — hold Kansas City without a touchdown.I had my concerns. I asked Patrick Mahomes last week how the team was preparing to face a very talented defensive front, knowing that the loss of left tackle Eric Fischer was a blow to their offensive line; the Chiefs entered Sunday with only one of their five presumptive starters on the line from the preseason. Mahomes knew it would be a battle. He said in part:It’s going to be a great challenge for them, but we’re going to do what we can to get the ball out of my hands, and get it to the playmakers and let them make plays with it.So let’s talk about that. Firstly, the Chiefs offensive line was overwhelmingly mismatched. While Mahomes was only sacked three times, he was under constant siege, oftentimes scrambling nearly twenty yards behind the line of scrimmage to avoid the pressure. While the optics showed that to be the case, the stats are worse. According to ESPN Stats & Info, Patrick Mahomes was pressured more in this game than any quarterback in Super Bowl History (29), passing the record of 25 set by Jim Kelly in SB XXVI. Brady faced his fewest pressures (4) in any Super Bowl of his career. The fact that he took only three sacks on 29 pressures is a Herculean effort. According to NextGenStats, the Chiefs used a 5-man protection on 92.3 percent of their dropbacks. How the Chiefs didn’t gameplan to use additional blockers knowing their offensive line was vastly depleted is beyond me, and it cost them. Head Coach Andry Reid is notorious for making in-game adjustments. This is one that he missed.G/O Media may get a commissionWhile Mahomes was running for his life and trying to make otherworldly plays, his teammates didn’t help. On one of his seemingly endless scrambles last night, while falling to the ground, Mahomes flicked the ball on a rope 30 yards towards the end zone. In my opinion, this would have been the greatest Super Bowl touchdown pass of all time had Darrell Williams caught it instead of letting it hit him square in the facemask. After the game, I asked Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis about covering the Chiefs skill players for so long in coverage as Mahomes was scrambling and trying to make plays happen. Carlton said:I mean it’s something that we knew that they did a lot, and we knew that they had a lot of success with [Mahomes] getting out of the pocket, and creating more time for his receivers to get down field, so that was a big emphasis this whole week – to just plaster to the receivers, stay on top of him even when he’s outside the pocket, and just trust the D-line and trust that they would get him down.Carlton was in coverage for 54 coverage snaps. He was targeted only four times, allowing two receptions for only 14 yards, and the Buccaneers defense held Mahomes to 270 passing yards, two interceptions, and zero touchdowns. There’s no chance the Buccaneers would have dreamed this game would go any better, on both sides of the ball. .

The Patriots won Tampa Bay a Super Bowl

Rob Gronkowski and Tom Brady teamed up for two touchdowns.Image: APSeven. It’s the number of how many deadly sins there are, the numeral on Colin Kaepernick’s jersey, days in a week, and how many whole days Toni Braxton once went without hearing from her lover.Seven is also how many Super Bowl rings Tom Brady has now, which is one more than the Patriots and Steelers have as entire franchises. Seven is also two fewer than the nine points the Chiefs scored on Sunday night, as Todd Bowles’ defense led Tampa Bay to a 31-9 victory. If you’re a Kansas City fan or hate the Patriots and Tom Brady, then Sunday night was a tough one for you. The guy that people love to hate and who used to play for that team that everyone despises, won another Super Bowl with the help of his old teammates from Foxboro, as 21 of the Bucs’ 31 points were scored by former Patriots.Brady finished 21-for-29 for 201 yards and 3 touchdowns, as he won his record fifth Super Bowl MVP.Rob Gronkowski, who came out of retirement to join Brady in Tampa, caught 6 balls for 67 yards and scored two touchdowns, as Brady and Gronk set the record for most postseason touchdowns between a quarterback and receiver at 14. G/O Media may get a commissionAntonio Brown, the alleged domestic abuser, hauled in 5 passes for 22 yards and a touchdown. But besides Sunday night being gut-wrenching for Bill Belichick, it was also a reminder of how fans love to anoint athletes like Mahomes too quickly as the next G.O.A.T. while the current G.O.A.T. is proving he still has a lot left in the tank. After ending last season by throwing a pick-six in his final game as a Patriot, Brady watched last year’s Super Bowl from the stands. He was pissed. While everyone was excited by what Patrick Mahomes did in last year’s Super Bowl, it was as if they forgot that it was also the first Super Bowl Brady wasn’t playing in, in four years. You have to remember, Brady has been here before. There was Russell Wilson, and Matt Ryan, and Jared Goff, and now Mahomes. Facing, and beating, the young and “up-and-coming” next great quarterback is what he does best. But people have selective amnesia. Over the next few days, you will rightfully hear a ton about Brady and the outstanding scheme that Todd Bowles put together in shutting down the Chiefs’ high-powered offense. But what most people will try to skip over is just how horrific Mahomes was on Sunday night. When you sign a contract worth half a billion dollars, you deserve to catch hell after going 26-for-49 for 270 yards with 2 interceptions and 3 sacks. Mahomes and the Chiefs were trying to make history as being the first repeat champion since the 2004 and 2005 Patriots. You should already know who the last quarterback was to pull off that feat. “Yeah, we’re coming back,” declared Brady on the podium after the game. I believe him, and you should, too. Because even if you hate Tom Brady and his former Patriots teammates, by now you should have learned your lesson. Being a non-believer in White Jesus has never worked out for anyone. .

Waiting on those Eagles sausages and the Carson Wentz trade … so let’s figure out where he should go

Bet he’d like to know too, already.Image: Getty ImagesHave you ever seen the movie “Snatch”? No, really. The 2000 Guy Ritchie crime/comedy movie starred Benecio Del Toro, Brad Pitt, Jason Statham, Dennis Farina, Vinnie Jones, and a slew of other notable faces. If so, or even if not (just go with it), at one point, Statham’s character (Turkish) turns to Charlie, who is working on the grill and asks, “What’s happening with those sausages, Charlie?” Charlie responds, “Two minutes, Turkish.” A few minutes pass. Turkish again asks “What’s happening with those sausages, Charlie?” Charlie responds, “five minutes, Turkish.” Turkish looks confused. He answers “it was ‘two minutes’ five minutes ago.”OK, stay with me now: Sausage Charlie is the Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, Turkish is all of us, and the sausages are Carson Wentz. The Carson Wentz saga has been brewing for months, ever since rookie Jalen Hurts was handed the keys to the quarterback car with his first career start on Dec. 13 against New Orleans. He started the remainder of the season. We’ve all known the Eagles would be wise to move on from Carson Wentz and his insanely bloated contract (he’s a $59.2 million dead cap hit in 2021), but finding a suitor didn’t always seem to be possible. Now, we’ve heard for the better part of a week that things are ramping up, and that trade talks are ongoing. It’s now being reported that the sausages – I mean, Wentz – will be ready – I mean, traded – in 2 minutes – I mean, in the coming days. If the Eagles can get out of their own way and stop asking for multiple first round picks, they might just pull this off. And by “pull this off,” I mean throw a little bit of water out of the already-sinking ship. So, let’s speculate, shall we? Who would be the most ideal trade partners to give Carson Wentz a fresh start? .
